Plot: B *The show follows Lain, a middle school girl who gets introduced to the Wired, which is the 90's cyberpunk version of the internet. The show is about showcasing how one day in the future, the physical world will not be so different from the 'wired' world. (digital world) It proposes the question what the difference between neurons and transistors are and what makes human memories different from information flowing through machines? If you have a physical body and a 'body' in the wired (a digital version of yourself) would they be the same? Would you be able to keep your individuality? Without going into spoilers, the show involves a conspiracy, scientific experiments, and is told in a non-conventional way with lots of cuts in time, alternating between the physical and the 'wired' worlds, and having title cards in the similar way to how Jean-Luc Godard does in his films (hence him being one of the main influences). But much like with Godard,
Nakaido 'Chabo' Reichi - Serial Experiments Lain Soundtrack Year: 1998. File Size: 284 MB. Encoding: Lossless. Colt trooper mark v serial numbers. Download in comments. Full Album Sample. Note: The first song in the sample is not included on this album, it is the last song on the Cyberia Mix. Lain's Theme; Pulse Beat.
Visuals: B- *The experimental aspects of the show are cool. Especially the montages and when they mix in 3D with the traditional 2D animation. And Lain herself has a really cute character design. But besides that, this anime is not pretty to look at partially by design due to it being a a bit of a dystopian cyberpunk show. Yet even so, the color palette is a grayish-green. The other characters are often making very creepy faces. And there is a lot of emphasis on the way teeth move in it is very unsettling to look at. Plus, I get it. Lain has a cute design, but how often do we need to look deep into her eyes? We get it, you guys must love Blade Runner, but holy hell!
Voice Acting: B *Don't bother with the dub. It's not good and I swapped to the sub right after seeing the first episode. The sub itself is fine. Although, there are some really creepy voices like Lain's father and the 'God'-entity. The latter might be by design, but the laugh of the father made me go 'eeew!' aloud.
Film Score/Soundtrack: B *Melodic, soothing, and at times, outright moody. However, there are some pretty catchy club themes and upbeat tracks for when the show goes in montage mode. I probably won't relisten to the majority of these tracks again, but it does set an awesome atmosphere in the show and many of the songs make for nice standalone tracks.
***My favorite track: The Ballad of Albatross
(You know me, I am a sucker for good ballads. And this is a soothing, instrumental that picks up it's intensity as the song goes and has a lot of feeling in it.
***Bonus Track: Cyberia
(How could I not include the main theme of the show's club? Such a badass track!)
Characters: D *The weakest aspect of the show. So much unexplained. So much left to interpretation. And honestly, outside of Arisu, I really didn't care for any of the characters. That is partially because they are living in a world in which the wired and the physical are slowly merging into one which is making most people devoid of personality and also by design since we see the world through Lain's eyes and she is far from the most reliable narrator since she drifts from place to place spoiler: click to read and is often lost and having to figure out where and when she is. However, this makes it hard to connect with anyone other than Lain who really isn't that interesting of a character.
Cringeworthy Anime Moments: This is one of the most anti-anime trope anime shows out there. If anything, it could use some light-hearted humor. This is an atmospheric, slow-burner of a show. While I typically enjoy atmospheric shows, this takes a lot of effort to watch and you need to put all of your focus into it so you can understand it. The main anime moments that confused me had to do with the Cyberia club where they let 12-year-old kids regularly attend despite clearly serving alcohol, having dancers, and there being a shooting there too.

Opening: HELP ME TO BREEEEEEEEATHEEEE!!!!!! The mellow 90's contemporary pop song that most country artists wish they could make. But on top of that, the visuals to go along with this highly addictive tune are beautiful and well synchronized which allows for a lot of replayability.

Closing: Is it just me, or does it sound like the vocalist is struggling really hard to pass a kidney stone? Also, ooooh look at this. A naked girl surrounded by wires. I'm sure #rule34 has never played with these visuals.
